Birthday Tea

Theo hosted a wonderful birthday tea about 10 days ago. The menu included petits fours, oat cakes with clotted cream, and gourmet finger sandwiches (curried egg salad; pureed white bean with arugula; nutella and elderflower-orange marmalade; hummus and cucumber). Guests drank tea, sparkling apple juice, and Glogg. His godfather, George, helped immensely with the cooking, hosting, and cleanup!

The best part, of course, was Theo's "smash cake." This is news to me (Laura) but evidently it's customary for a child to have his or her own small birthday cake to tear into as he or she sees fit. Theo's was a white cake with rainbow confetti sprinkles from the Hy-Vee. We have video of the demolition (forthcoming) but for now, here are some pictures of what he, and the cake, looked like afterwards.
